Entry 1 The Start up of You

 January 9, 2021

Of all the things I studied this week I was most interested in the ideas and principles in the article entitled "The Start up of You, Executive Summary" so that is what I will focus this blog post on. The article stated that everyone in every career is an entrepreneur, which  Their rationale is that we're all "at the helm of at least one living, growing start-up venture (our) careers." (Hoffman and Casnocha.)
The article goes on to list ways that we can continue to improve ourselves and our entrepreneurial skills. I liked how it brought up being aware of what we bring to the table, and then sharpening those skills. As far as practical solutions I found the section on networking particularly interesting as I know that is an area that I am weak in. The authors specifically mentioned LinkedIn and ways to strengthen relationships and expand your network. It finally clicked to me why those networks are so important.
Their sections on taking risks in our careers I also found helpful, they explained how many of us see risk as only a bad thing but that it is actually a "permanent part of life," and that if one understands the different types of risks and how to navigate them risk can actually benefit them and lead to another principle they spoke of "breakout opportunities" where we can rapidly change and better our careers.
In the last section of the article they gave a quote by Bill Gates that I want to remember so I will quote it here, “The most meaningful way to differentiate your company from your competitors, the best way to put distance between you and the crowd is to do an outstanding job with information. How you gather, manage and use information will determine whether you win or lose." Reciting facts is not enough, we need to know how to learn and gain knowledge and then be prepared to apply it in real life situations and always continue to learn and adapt.
